His poetry and nationalist activism earned him the popular title of Bidrohi Kobi (Rebel Poet). That is why, in the poem Hindu-Muslim, he hoped to bring everyone together. The second part consists of translation of Nazrul’s Bidrohi into all Indian languages that have a script that amounts to as many as one hundred translations. Kazi Nazrul Islam was a Bengali poet, musician and revolutionary who pioneered poetic works espousing intense spiritual rebellion against fascism and oppression. Nazrul was popularly known as Bidrohi Kobi i.e. The first one is to prepare a database of reception to Nazrul in Indian literatures and the first phase of the project is already in progress and covers Assamese, Hindi, Marathi, Odia and Tamil. This year being the centenary of the composition of Kazi Nazrul Islam’s famous poem Bidrohi, Delhi Comparatists, in collaboration with the Nazrul Centre for Cultural Studies, Kazi Nazrul University, West Bengal and Department of MIL & LS have undertaken a project on Nazrul. Starting from the East-West encounters and Shakespeare studies, receptions to Bankimchandra and Tagore in Indian literatures are some of the studies that have been undertaken in this area. Studies on reception in Indian literatures to prominent Indian writers is an area in which the Department of MIL & LS, University of Delhiand Delhi Comparatists have been engaged with for a long time.
